Lee has been a mainstay in American culture since 1889, when it was initially established as a general mercantile company. In the early 20th century, witnessing massive growth in its workwear, the company switched its focus exclusively to apparel. Lee’s iconic Union-Alls, the first one-piece coverall, designed to protect clothing below the waist and above it, was created in 1913. Adaptations of these coveralls and other workwear became popular among America’s work force: auto mechanics, steel workers, aviation, working cowboys, and railroad workers, to name a few industries. Later, the jean pants developed specifically for cowboys became known as Lee Riders. By 1925, Lee was pioneering industry-leading manufacturing techniques for denim. Lee became the country’s largest manufacturer of workwear in 1937. To this day, Lee remains one of the largest and most respected brands in workwear, but its appeal has extended well beyond that, becoming an indispensable statement of style and identity.
